You must save the .ls files which are a text version of the .tp files. They can also be viewed on the robot web server.

To save as .LS you need the ASCII option on your robot. If you have that, just press, menu, file, backup, ASCII. This would save it as a text file. You could modify and re-upload it, but more than likely you will have syntax errors unless you know how to type it out really good.
If you don't have that option, you can plug into the Ethernet on the robot and type the IP in Windows IE. View the program and copy paste it somewhere.
other than that, the next cheapest option would be to buy WinOLPC, less than a grand in cost.

Install the back up media and make sure it is selected,
press select on the pendant and curser to the program you want to save,
press the next button, press print, The program will be saved to the back up media as an LS file that can be opened in wordpad -
You don't need ascii upload to save the .ls files on r30ib and later r30ia. When you make your backup, go to the next screen in the backup menu and select "ASCII FILES".

I've never tried the print idea.

Print all TP and Macro programs as text-editable .LS files, R-30iA
This procedure may be useful for Fanuc robots that do not have the ASCII files option.
1. Insert a USB stick into the USB port on the door. A 2GB capacity stick works fastest. A message will appear in the message bar if the controller recognizes the media.
2. Navigate MENU to the File menu.
3. Set device, F5[UTILS] Set device, to UD1, (or whatever external memory media you are using).
4. Make a directory, F5[UTILS] Make DIR, with a unique name. Repeat to make all desired directories.
5. Note the correct root directory (UD1) and path name appearing in the path header (i.e. UD1:\xxxCON\F12345txt). The directory path will appear just below the blue banner.
6. Now set the device to MD: F5[UTILS], Set device, MD:** Do NOT press the enter key in the next step.
7. Use the cursor key to highlight *.LS Do not press enter.
8. Press the next key, if necessary, to view the soft Fkey F2[COPY].
9. Press F2[COPY].
10. Press F4[CHOICE].
11. Choose UD1 (or other device from step 3), and verify that the displayed path is the same as that noted in step 5.
12. Press F1[DO COPY].
13. A prompt will appear asking if you want to overwrite. If step 11 is satisfied, press YES.Note: Production can continue during this procedure. In some cases, messages to the Teach Pendant will “kick you out” while you are trying to navigate menus for this procedure. If this happens, simply double the screen (new color pendant) and conduct this procedure in the right windowpane.

what is "usurps method" method????User USURP_RUR's method, two posts above. Copies the whole MD drive.
how can i read .va files in notepad??please explain
Open notepad, go file, then open, then hit all files for the filetype and go find the .va file you want to look at, and open it.
Alternatively find the .va file, right click on it, select open with, and pick notepad.

USURP's method wont get you anything but the .LS files, as long as you follow step 7 correctly. Skipping step 7 will get you the whole MD backup including variable files.

Ahh, you're right. I should have read it more thoroughly.

I also strongly recommend to do the same for the *.VA files, which will save the system variables in human-readable form.
