I don't recall ever seeing that before. They might have been added aftermarket by someone who used them for... I dunno. To trip limit switches, maybe?
The axis hard stops were mounted in a similar fashion, but much larger and spanning 4-6 bolts (which had to be replaced with longer bolts of a specific length). That little thing is definitely not a hard stop of any kind.
don't think i've seen it either. looks like seal retention clamp. maybe an aftermarket product or part of a retrofit kit.
