Double Torch Welding Robot Idea

  • Hey friends,

Wanted to see what you thought about mounting two welding torches onto a single robot (assuming payload is not a factor)? This would only work as long as you leave movement onto the XYZ planes. What do you think? Could this be done, has it already, why wouldn't it work?

    Thanks!

  • We have a customer who has exactly that. His torches are mounted 180 degrees opposite each other. They use it for welding both sides of small parts. It works well but it's a pain to have to reteach as you have to keep in mind the position of both torches when you reteach. But other than that, it works well!

That was my concern, your piece parts would need almost perfect presentation and fit-up every time and in my experience of welding that's not always the case.

  • 15+ years ago, had an M94A IRB6400-2.8 that came out of GM Arlington with 2 fixed torches on the EOAT that were used simultaneously to give 2 welds on parallel paths. The tight tolerances in parts & fixturing gave it successful results. It had 2 Miller Deltawelds and had put in years of welding on the assembly line. Was weird to see ArcWare on a 6400, too bad I lost the backup to a hard drive crash years ago.

I've used the tandem setup that Tyler posted. It was needed for a big controllable puddle to fix terrible part fit up issues. Lincoln was extremely helpful with the software updates in the i400s used. The torch cleaner was funky looking and expensive.

  • I have to ask, why would you want to do that?.

If you have two parallel paths that need to get welded, than you could achieve 2X faster with a single pass. It would most likely limit your robot to that specific part only, but if the quantity can justify it than power to you!

Not necessarily limited, you could set it up so that you weld with both at the same time, or just one or the other.
