this is why default setting is to $IN[1025]. guess what that input is...
we have moved the $MoveEnable to 972.

Move Enable is necessary for all modes. Drives On is only needed for EX, and unlike Move Enable, it is a pulse, just to turn the motors on.
$DRIVES_OFF is a (badly named) steady-state signal that needs to be True at all times for AUT or EX modes. Turning this signal False will turn off the robot motors.
yep, Kuka did not choose character to indicate inverse state... (exclamation point or whatever).
one that always annoys me is $ALARM_STOP...
They just could not name it something meaningful such as $ESTOP_OK or similar.
