I need to be able to enter a cell to put cardboard down and then continue. The cell has photo eyes that have $MOVE_ENABLE attached to them. If I put $SAFEGATE_OP for my interrupt and then wire a button that performs $CONF_MESS to resume. Does anyone have a better idea or see why this would not work?

$SAFEGATE_OP is just monitor, it tells if gate is ok (closed) in automatic mode
$CONF_MESS is used to acknowledge messages in EXT modethey are not related. more over both of them are just standard signals (not safe).
Operator safety is a safety input and this is where gates etc are wired to.
Acknowledgment is done by another safety input (Ack Operator Safety). -

It's a good way to get someone killed.
If you want to stop a robot in a safety-rated fashion, you have to use the actual Safety inputs (through the X11, or the networked safety, depending on your robot configuration). And use safety-rated components (full dual-channel) for your sensors.
