Password Config Export

So, I just installed J541 Password Protection onto a production R30iB, and need to configure it. Since I haven't played with this before, I built a virtual clone in RoboGuide and started setting up passwords.

So far, I've been able to set up basic Install, Programmer, and Setup users. But for the more granular control, making custom user levels, I apparently need to edit an XML file and import it. If I understand the manual correctly, I should be able to Export the XML file for the users I already have, then edit the file and Import it again. But when I try to use the Export function, I just get a "Passwords not set up" message.

Did I misunderstand the manual? Do I need to create the PASSLVL.XML file offline initially?

Yeah, I got my Install user and a few Setup users defined. But no Export. And no password files in the MD backup, aside from PASSCFG.DG, which appears to be an HTML index page pointing to the various PASSxxx.XML files. I assume this is the Index accessed by the pendant browser when I go to the HELP/DIAGNOSTICS>PASSWORD display.

I may be able to get by with the default User Levels, but I'm having a hard time finding anything in the manual that details what Programmer, Setup, and Operator each can/cannot do. Or do they all have Install levels of access until after I start making/editing the PASSLVL file?

Well, after some experiments:

Operator (the lowest level and what the robot boots to) appears to have Select/Abort authority, and can make backups from the File menu, but oddly only to UD1 -- trying to change devices generates an error. Jogging, selecting UTool/UFrame, and most of the FCTN menu options seem to work. But Registers and I/O are read-only.

The robot also boots to a Login screen, but hitting Cancel appears to drop you into the regular pendant startup page, logged in as Operator.

Programmer (the next level up) seems to gain write access to Registers but not I/O. Most Setup items appear to be read-only. Teaching or editing UFrame/UTool appears to be disallowed, for example. Programmer can access all the devices under the File menu.

A quick test of the Setup level didn't reveal anything I couldn't get at. I'm thinking Setup may have maximum user rights except for adding/removing/changing users and password levels, which is explicitly reserved to the Install level.

For "granular" control editing the .XML files, it gets weird. The manual insists I can get at the "sample" XML files by accessing the robot home page via browser, and I can, but... the browser shows them being located in MD, but I can't find them through the File menu, even though the manual insists I can copy them out to USB using the File menu. I think I can get by with the default levels, but it's strange that the manual is so far off.

I tried doing a DIR for both *.XML and *.*. No files visible either way.

Side note: Building a RoboGuide robot from a real robot's backup does not bring in the password settings. In fact, I had passwords set up on my RG clone, and when I Serialized it to a new backup from the real robot, the password settings were completely wiped.

So getting a handle on the XML files will be important for certain operations, even for situations where only the "standard" user levels are being used.
