We had 3 pick and place robots built back in 2014 from a system integrator. If we fast forward to now only 1 is still in production now and it lacking some abilities because of the lacking camera ability. we are picking up parts with a range if sizes but on the smallest end of .010"x.03". The other 2 have been robbed of parts but are mostly all there. My question would be can we upgrade the M-1ia that use a R-30iA controller to the R-30iB controller. I know the switch over would a lot of work but we would be able to gain a lot of features from upgrading. On avg what would just the R-30iB controller cost and would the resell value of the R-30iA be?

Probably would be easier to buy an entire new robot. You could call Fanuc and ask.

When the robot is fully supported by the new controller it is not a big problem to switch.
When it is not, it is often possible but a lot of work and pretty risky.
You will have to change the parameters for the servo's and the encoders and the pinout of the cables will be different as well.
However...
You will still have a 8 years old robot in a worn state (you have cannibalised the other robots for parts for a reason)
The difference between the resell vallue and the price of the new controller will be BIG, while the resell vallue of the robot with controller will be much more.
So,
My advice : Do as Hawkme sais and buy a new one, and sell the old robot.

have you ever performed such a conversion?

I did it twice.
First time it was a S-500 RJ-2 robot on a RJ contoller.
That went pretty smooth with almost no trouble, and now, more than twenty years later, it is still running.
The second time was a lot more difficult.
My boss bought at an auction a M16i RJ-3 robot and controller, but the controller was meant for a S420 RJ-2.
Ah, that's why it was so cheap, said boss...
In the end we got it working, and it did it's job until it was decommissioned four years later, but we decided to never do it again because it was not worth all the trouble.
