Minimum Seam Length for Seam Tracking to be effective

    Hi.

    A old colleague got in contact with me this morning regarding the minimum seam bead for tracking to be effective and I was kinda not sure what the minimum is. :thinking_face:.What I have gathered through the years is that I normally don't track on anything that have a bead less than 50 mm long because just as the weld is almost over the tracking have started to correct itself and then you are left with miss welding at the start while the middle-to-end weld is moving towards the right location. Center Line tracking specifically.

    Does anybody know what is the minimum length of what Weldguide will be able to track efficiently?

    Is there any parameters to adjust and make modify the minimum to what you want?

    It's a bit of a "how long is a piece of string" question....

    In general I agree with you, shorter than 50mm is kind of pointless.

    Besides if part variation is so big that you can't accommodate for shifts on short welds with just a simple start search then you've got way bigger problems then the length of the seam itself.

    That said, tracking CAN be made effective over short distances (theoretically anyway), it all depends on your weld speed, weld parameters and weave, so while there's a way to make it work - only that it may not work for your part.

    If cycle time is an issue or if you're dealing with buttjoints making it hard to use a standard wire/cup/1d search then I'd look into using a laser scanner, not cheap, but they're nice.

    Depends what sensor are you use. You can send the robot above (a few millimeters above) the Start Point (ArcOn) and leave the robot to correct with the sensor. After that the robot starts the welding at the right position and continue to weld at the right path.
