Is there a way to password protect data registers while still allowing the program to manipulate them?
Password protect data registers

Yes. This is actually a bit of a flaw in the password system. Programs have access to whatever they have access to. If you locked down everything except the ability to make and run programs, and person could still manipulate things by programming them in and running that program.
Protecting the data registers will still allow programs to use and change their values.

Thank you, this will put my mind at ease. Do you have specifics on how to do this? R30iB controller.

You need to make a custom password level definition file in XML. There is a section on the details in the Handling Tool Manual, and i have attached one that we use. As a general rule, i like to set the level to either the highest or lowest level and then add or remove permissions as needed.
There is a huge amount of customization available, and the manual provides a lot of good information.
Once you have the XML file, you will go through a process like this.
1. Set your file path from the file menu. I usually use UD1 if i can, as it is faster and i have had some issues with UT1 in general. However, UT1 SHOULD work in most instances. Insert the USB drive containing your XML file into the selected port.
2. Go to the password setup and create the Install User.
3. Once logged in as Install, shift to the second range of F# keys and select Config. Import the XML file to define your levels.
4. Create your users and set their levels as appropriate.

There’s a little button on the tp screen in the bottom left that looks like four squares. When password protection is enabled, pressing it brings you to a screen to change users. The only user listed is the install user even though there are others created. Anyone know how to fix this? Fanuc is at a loss.

I am unfamiliar with this button, could you send a picture? Ours has a visual indication of the current screen mode and which screen is active, but it does not seem to act like a button.
Navigating to the password screen the normal way through Menu -> Setup -> Passwords, do you still only see one user?

This is the button and screen I was referring to. The issue is our “production” team would be locked out of the Menu -> Setup -> Password access, so the only point of access to change user is this screen.
As the “install” user, there are several users at different access levels listed.

Are you using HMI Menus? I will go try that.
Edit: HMI menu either does not do what i thought it did, or it requires a power cycle to change. Either way, i am not sure how you got your screen to look like that. What controller and software version do you have? I have R-30iB V8.30
Edit: Just noticed the background, you appear to be working in RoboGuide. Does your physical TP screen have that button?

Happens in both. I disabled it on our real robot. Pulled up an older version in RG to get the screen shots for this conversation.
This is on an R30iB plus controller. V9.10p/12

Maybe it is something new to that version. If you enable the Password menu for the lower level (Temporarily) and log in at that level the long way, then return to that screen and press the four squares, what options appear? Could it be being populated incorrectly with the logged in user instead of the available user? I wish i could get to the same screen, i would be interested in having a similar log in screen.

I’ll keep ya posted. Fanuc claimed it’s a software bug and will notify us when there’s an update. But the functionality of password protection has been lacking for some time, so I don’t anticipate a fast resolve there. I’ll be looking for a work around in the mean time.

I have also had many struggles with the password option. I get the feeling that they threw in some features and then no one really used them or stretched them to the limit, and now that people ARE putting their systems to the test, bugs are coming out that should have been handled well before.
On the other hand, it is pretty cool being on the leading edge of the development and usage of the password system, and being able to help set the standard for how it is used within our company!
