I have a pick and place application that I need help with on selecting a robot and I want to be sure of my robot selection, specifically time/distance. Manufacturers list robot speeds in mm/s but what is the distance they are basing this off of, 10mm move, 100mm move, etc..? I need to pick, move 300mm, place, move back 300mm. What should I be asking and/or looking for in the specifications?

Robot speeds are highly parametric, depending on loading, reach, and distance. Programming also plays a role, since joint motions can be much faster than interpolated motions, at the expense of path predictability. Gripper actuation and sensing also plays a role in how long the robot has to spend stopped at each end.

Contact your robot company's Applications Engineering department and have them mock up your system and prove it's performance. Mockups may be actual physical builds, or digital if they have a good simulator.
