There is no direct command to rename ANY variables.
The only command RENAME available is for renaming of programs.
Variables or stored in their own registers and also the pointer to these variables will be in the programs used to address them.
Therefore, when changing variable names, this needs to be done in the programs, but will not affect the stored variable name in the respective register.
But (back to your question).
Teach pendant keyboard or online editor is a command line interface.....line by line instruction.
For example if you have a program written with a variable name you wish to change in the program.
From the teach pendant keyboard $ prompt or from an online editor > prompt:
Option 1:
a. edit program name.
b. s 23 (step no to edit).
c. o and enter (overwrite command).
d. cursor back and delete and retype and press enter.
e. e to exit.
Option 2:
a. edit program name.
b. s 23 (step no to edit).
c. use modify instruction which in your case would be m/x/y and press enter.
d. e to exit.
You will need to change the variable in every program that you are intending on using it as you are only editing it in the current program.
When you have done all your changes, the original variable will still remain in the associated register, but as long it is not being addressed by any other programs, you can then delete it.
This is a little archaic, therefore some people adopt the method of (which I don't use) of downloading the data to a PC, using some text editor and find all/change all instances of the variable to change and then upload it to apply the changes.
This information is available in the AS Programming Reference Manual.
Search for Editor Commands in the AS manual for a list of commands available for online editing.
A word of warning when online editing using the teach pendant keyboard or online editors.
There is no undo function or recycle bin, so the changes you make are instantly applied.
Hope this helps........
