I am currently working on a project, where we have a couple of robots with Schunk PGN+80-1 grippers.

The stroke is 8 mm pr finger on these grippers. We want to be able to detect the following cases:
1. Gripper is completely open.
2. Gripper is completely closed.
3. Gripper is at position 1 +-1 mm
4. Gripper is at position 2 +-1 mm
5. Gripper is at position 3 +-1 mm
Position 1, 2 and 3 are about 2 mm apart.
I guess that the best way to solve this problem, is to buy an analog sensor, like this:

Do any of you have experience with a solution like this? Is it a durable solution? Are the measurements reproducable? And is it very expensive?
