We have an ABB 4400 IRC5 it's about 5 years old now the cell controller is still using Win XP that OS has been running so well I have never even ran the defrag my concern is that some day we will have to upgrade to Win 7 or 8 I am always reluctant to upgrade especially when all is well.
My questions are how long can we get away with using XP?
What do I need to do to keep it running good for as long as possible?

is it standalone?
is it connected to an internal network?
Can the PC access internet?
Can anyone access the PC ,locally or over the network ?If the answers are : Yes / No / No / No , then i see no problems. Otherwise you have to think about it. At the plant where i work we have several systems running XP. Some of them are standalone with autologin (with limited user rights). Others are in a local network, in their own LAN. Those systems don't have internet access, so it's a limited risk.

Then you can use it meanwhile it doesn't give you headaches.
I would add that if you are not using special hardware, you should virtualize it so you could use the virtual machine if you have to replace the pc for any reason.
