    Good day,

To interface our robots and PLCs, we normally have Ethernet/IP Adapter (R784) on the robots to act as the slave while PLCs are the master. I've also worked with robots that have had Ethernet/IP Scanner installed (R785) to act as the master device.

We just got in a new robot that has both Ethernet/IP Adapter and Scanner options installed, which I've never seen before. Just wondering if there's any chance that having the Scanner option installed will somehow interfere with having the robot configured as an EtherNet/IP slave device. We've got a tight installation timeline and I just wanted to minimize any potential hiccups.

    Thank you.

I have seen this before, it will not be an issue. sometimes people are unsure of what options are required they just order everything. since you reference R785 that tells me your robot is a Fanuc. if you look into the Advanced EIP Scanner or Advanced EIP Adapter options they actually include the basic EIP adapter or scanner respectively.

I would advise against using the robot as the scanner unless you don't have a PLC. it will work but the robot is a poor replacement for the PLC in more ways than I can list and I have seen some major TP lag due to the robot acting as scanner for too many devices.

    Good day,

I have a robot that does not have either an adapter or a scanner. I need to connect the robot with a welding system that has an ethernet/IP adapter (slave). Can you kindly guide me on what steps to be taken to establish communication between the two devices? Is PLC necessary between the systems? The robot uses MODBUS-UDP via API. Would a gateway work?

Any assistance would be highly appreciated.

Generally, use the scanner for controlling the robot tool or connected equipment such as welding power source or seperate external axes.

I'm not an expert in this but I think if you want the robot and the welding system to communicate via EtherNet/IP then you'll need to install the EtherNet/IP scanner option on the robot. You don't need a PLC but there needs to be an EtherNet/IP master.

Maybe check if the robot has the Modbus TCP option installed, and whether your welding system supports it. Easier to setup in my experience than EtherNet/IP.
