I want to mount irbp positioner S2/S3 first generation on M98 robot, is it possible?

    Good afternoon,

    I want to mount a first generation irbp S2/S3 positioner on the M98 robot, is it possible?

    After the Christmas holidays I will go see it and check the connections to see if it is possible to mount it on our Irb 1400 M98 robot

    The table would be like the one in the photos:

    Does anyone know if the adaptation is possible?

    I know that I would need an SMB for the table and a new driver like the ones that the table has + the wiring but my question is if it is valid since the table is from another generation.

    I cannot view pictures in the link provided.

    Do you have the model #?
    Model #s for the old S2/S3 positioners started with MHAxxxy with xxx = the load capacity and y = the positioner type (A, L, R, K).

    It should work with the right parameters but worst-case, you may need to upgrade motor to one from S4C era.

    I would say it is equivalent to an IRBP 250R from the S4 series.

    What I’m unsure about is whether it was called the same in the S2/S3 series.

    Hello again,

    I was finally able to go see everything today. This is the little information I managed to gather:

    - The table is mounted on an ABB IRB 2000 yellow robot (I would say it’s an S3 generation), but I’m a bit lost when it comes to robots older than the S4 generation.
    I’ve attached an internet photo of an identical robot and the one I saw (they didn’t let me remove the plastic), but it’s the same model.

    The programming unit looks like this:

    - The connectors on the table are not like those of the S4 IRB robots. They have a different connector (if it works, adapting it wouldn’t be an issue for me).

    - The motors on the table have this specification plate (station 1 and 2):
    ESAB Sweden

    - The motor of the exchanger has this specification plate (exchanger):

    I’m adding another photo I managed to take from the robot’s side of the table. I looked everywhere on the table and I don’t see any plate with the name anywhere. I also opened all the covers to check the motors, but I didn’t find anything, only the motor specification plates, not one for the table.

    The old ESAB Orbit 160R positioners use DC drive technology with Labod Drives in a separate control cabinet. These could be operated up to the S4 generation (DSQC208A Board). S4C no longer supported this. Converting the manipulator to S4C drive technology is too complex and too expensive. The safety concept with activation/deactivation of the drives would also have to be integrated. ESAB provided special circuit boards for this purpose. It is almost impossible to get all this together and ultimately adapt the parameters of the S4C.

    I think the yellow robot control cabinet does have the DSQC208 card

    Then there is a second control cabinet, which I had doubts about when I saw it today, but I did see the contactors that control the table motors inside it, and I thought it must be related. The system is complete, but of course, it is designed to work with an S3 and I have the possibility of mounting it on an S4 M94 or M97 (I think they are already S4C here)

    How annoying I can't mount it on an S4C, thank you very much for answering and clearing up my doubts to know that it is not possible to mount it.

    This is the AC Drive version of the manipulator. This is not the same like your version. Came up with S3M92 (IRB1500) systems and works via the 7th internal drive unit with Common Drive switching (One drive for 3 axis, 10, 11, 12). Your S3 System is version M87 - M90A.

    Needs 3 AC-motors, 1 drive unit, 1 SMB Board, 1 Switching Board with safety Interface from ESAB, lots of cables..........

    Much cheaper to buy the complete system and sell your robot.
