My boss challenged me to use a conventional lathe as an external axis, the objective is to weld flanges, using a three-phase motor and a Siemens variable frequency driver on the lathe, and on this motor to allocate an encoder to know its position.
I have only programmed robots for "aut" and "autext" palletizing, and I do not know the possible obstacles that I will face for this welding application.
I don't need this external axis to constantly follow the tcp, I just need to know when to turn the torch on and off to make the 360º contour of the flage, because the torch will be motionless while the lathe bushing rotates.
My question is, is this application possible? Or is it really only possible to do this by installing a KSD and a compatible engine?
In terms of communication, I know that I will need at least one analog input and output to add to the backhoff.
