according to the video, the Robot pick and transfer application seems well. I was told by Mechanical Design Engineer that the weight of gripper is 23 kg, and the work-piece held 2.5 kg/per. the maximum payload of fanuc robot is 35 kg. I checked the robot program and happened to notice that there is none payload instruction found in controller.

So here is the question:Is payload setting important?or when must a payload setting instruction be set? Does payload instruction really make a difference to robot?

    Hi,

A lower Payload setting will make the robot accelerate/deccelerate quicker. A too low payload will cause wear and tear on the robot and a higher one will make it go slow.

in most instances a payload instruction should be used everytime a part is picked/dropped but it really depends on the application and robot model.

    Hi lavaman,

As a rule of thumb, you can say that the payload settings become more important with each controller generation.
With Fanuc, I would always recommend a correct payload from the R30iB (~2012) onwards!
In the application shown, the part or parts should also be taken into account! The payload schedule must therefore be switched during pick or place.
The gripper is very expansive. This means that the 2.5 kg part weight has a strong influence on moment of inertia!

So correct payload including center of gravity AND moment of inertia for
    - Empty gripper
    - Empty + 1 workpiece side 1
    - Empty + 1 workpiece side 2
    - Fully loaded

    is important.

    Hi,

by default, if no payload has been set by robot programmer, the maximum Payload available for robot is used.

Like gustavxb mentioned, using excessively high Payload (higher then used in realilty) will cause robot speed to move with reduced speed.

In my experience, the smaller the robot range of load capacity is, the more important it is to set up payload correctly.

Robot crashes are also much worse with the default payload if the robot actually has a small payload.

In my opinion, that's probably the most important reason to set an accurate payload.
