The system file "hiberfil.sys" takes up too much space on the hard drive.

  • Hello,

    Krc2, Kss5.6.12.

The system file "hiberfil.sys" which is related to the active hibernation process and is dependent on the size of the installed RAM in my case takes up too much space on the hard drive (shown in the first picture below). At second image is the used hdd space without "hiberfil.sys" file and at third image is the size of "hiberfil.sys" file). This file disappears, freeing up more hard disk space if hibernation in Wndows XPe is turned off.

    1. Does hibernation process have to be always active?

    2. What are the consequences for the functioning of Kuka system software, if hibernation is turned off?

    Thanks in advance.

Changed the title of the thread from “The system file "hiberfill.sys" takes up too much space on the hard drive.” to “The system file "hiberfil.sys" takes up too much space on the hard drive.”.
  • that file is part of Windows. why are you focusing on it? if the problem is lack of free space, why not increase partition size?

    1) read pinned topic: READ FIRST...

    2) if you have an issue with robot, post question in the correct forum section... do NOT contact me directly

    3) read 1 and 2

  • We always disable the hibernation. So the robot always make a cold start after power on. For me this is the best way, if your system has a fault that you have never seen, what is the first try to fix it? Normally power off / power on. If hibernation is active the faulty status is saved to hdd and robot starts again in the same faulty state.

So you have to activate cold start on the hmi, but how do you that, if the fault affects the hmi, and you can't activate cold start?

You are absolutely right at that point Hermann, but in the same time if everything works fine and the system incidently shuts down, reverting system to the previous working state should not be possible if hibernation is disabled.

By the way, would you give short explanation please, does the "hibernate" check option at krc2 shut down screen influence the "hibernate" option at Windows XPe Power option and vice versa?

  • There are actually three starts:

    - cold start (may take some time)

-- windows starts up from zero

-- vxworks starts up from zero

    - warm start

-- windows starts up from zero

-- vxworks sleeps and wake up

    - hibernate (fastest, as long as everything works/worked perfect)

-- windows sleeps and start up

-- vxworks sleeps and start up

  • Hibernate is copying the contents of memory to hard drive and activate at power up.

Corrupted hard drive may cause the system is not waking up again

How actually are you dissabling hibernation ?

  • Solved, turn off Hibernation in the Control panel/Power options/Hibernate and the Cold start will be performed trough the Shut down KRC/Start types menu.
