I am developing an agricultural robot and looking at options for actuating the steering mechanism.
I would like about 10 Nm of torque. I can achieve this with an industrial BLDC motor like the BLWRPG235S-36V-4000-R13 here https://www.anaheimautomation.com/p...gearmotor-item.php?sID=158&pt=i&tID=98&cID=47
This is comprised of a DC motor with 0.4 Nm output and a 13:1 planetary gearbox.
This will work for me but it is $300 and I would like to reduce this cost.
I note that a 6374 hobbyist DC motor can provide up to 8 Nm of torque without any gearbox and can cost only about $100.
I am trying to understand why a motor with so much more torque can cost so much less. And why no options like this are presented as far as I can tell in the industrial space.
I see 6374 type motor used mostly to drive electric skateboards. If so much torque can be had at a lower cost that BLDC gearmotors, why are these types of motors not used for actuators and industrial applications?
Appreciate any light that can be shed on this.

torque is just one of many parameters. if the agricultural tractors have so much torque, why then those tractors did not replace mobility scooters and electric wheelchairs?
i don't know what spec you are referring to. from what i can see that motor can do up to some 6000RPM at 3.5Nm and draws power of 3500W. that means efficiency is only about 60%. the heat dissipated at such situation would be 1400W or nearly 2HP. that is a lot of heat from such small package. 3.5kW industrial servo motor is some 10-15kg in weight.
