I am having problems with my KUKA KR 3 R540 robot, I have a KRC4 Compat controller, when I turn it on, this message is displayed and it does not progress from there

your smartPad is not connecting to KRC4...
maybe controller is not booting or there is a message with more info.
connect computer monitor directly to your controller, then power the robot up....

is there any other solution than connecting the computer with workvisual?

Your upper problem has nothing to do with WorkVisual or is this a new question out of context?
In KRC4 you can only configure your system by means of WorkVisual.
(Or by editing a lot of different configuration files by hand. At least if you are a super expert and know what your doing.)
So please Read "Read First" and then try again.
