I remember older KRC2 (the ones with Win95) have USB ports on PC, but they were disabled by default, and You need to install an external driver to make it work.
But I'm not sure KRC1 controllers have USB ports.
The best option would swap the floppy disk drive with one of that Floppy To USB adapters.

Did you got and floppy to usb adapter? Does it work? You had to do any installs besides the hardware part?

I know the question was directed to bastien diligent , but I think I can share my own experience in this regard.
These adapters normally work. I've installed some and never had problems.
You can buy them from KUKA (more expensive) or the generic ones on internet, also used on CNCs or music keyboards. I've bought the generic ones.
But You need to take care, because there are some different models out there, and not all of them will work with all equipment.
I've bought the adapters from a seller I know and who tested it on industrial robots. Some online sellers will told you if their product works with industrial equipment or not.
On robot side, the procedure is hardware only. Depending of the model of adapter, You will need to change some jumpers to make it work.
On computer site, You will need one or two softwares, normally delivered with adapter, to:
- Format the USB stick to make it work with the adapter, so is good to have one or more dedicated sticks only for backups.
- Read the contents of the USB stick. You can't read them without the software, but after You open the usb stick inside the software, You can copy/move the backups to other locations.
