what is the exact version of your KSS8.2?
early KSS8.2 versions (i think before 8.2.8 or so) did not support automatic update and insisted on specific smartPad application version (i think 2.0.4).
so changing version needed manual upgrade/downgrade on those KSS versions.
it is strongly recommended to contact Kuka about this to get files and instructions.
alternatively, updating ancient KSS8.2 to one of the newer versions (for example 8.2.18+) would also do the trick and this way all of your tech packages would still be ok and you don't have to spend on new licenses. doing so of course requires due diligence and making proper backups first.
if i remember, manual upgrade involved some steps like putting received files or content of D:\KRC_Release\INTERNAT\KRCSetup\KRC\SmartPad onto a USB stick
then connecting that stick to a smartPad,
getting to windows level (WinCE) and use WinCE Explorer to transfer some files.
USB would show up as "hard disk" so certain files would need to be transferred to smartPad's NAND_Flash. after this remove all USB devices, reboot and cross fingers.
