I need to make an Ethernet cable for ftp file transfer. Does anyone know what the crossover connection is called or what coloured wire goes where

With modern PC or Laptop most time you can use a normal patch wire 1:1. The modern interfaces have auto negotiation and switch the pins on the mainboard automatically.

I must try this, I was told the cable had to be a special crossover one so never even tried a normal one.

I've always used a crossover cable to connect w/ the service port on the front... but then, laptop is similar vintage as/to the S4C+ machines. The LAN port usually connects to hub/switch, so it is usually a straight cable.

Same as Iowan for S4C+ & IRC5.
When traveling, I carry a quality OEM cable with snagless ends and an RJ45 M/F crossover adapter instead of separate straight & crossover cables.

Where did you purchase these, was it from ABB?

Not ABB. Search "RJ45 M/F Crossover" on the internet. Don't remember where we bought them but there are lots of options. We bought 10 and I handed most of them out to others at work.
