Could any body advise on their experience / method of interfacing a bar code reader to the controller. I would like to scan our 'job packs' to determine and automatically select which program should be used on the robot.
The controller will be an R30 IB Plus A cabinet. I would imagine connection either RS232 port or USB. As we have not yet received the robots yet a general overview would be helpful and any indication of additional software options required. I have not bought the bar code reader yet so advice on this would also be appreciated. Would we need to use KAREL for the port access or are there other options?
Any advise will be greatly appreciated.

If you already have iRVision from FANUC it has some capabilities for reading barcodes.
If not, check out this manual: http://www.cognex.com/support/downlo…ms_Fanuc_v1%5B1 . It's for their InSight camera but I think it applies to some of their barcode reader also.
Still I would use an Ethernet barcode reader (I have some bad experience with RS232 especially). -
Best/cheapest method in my opinion is to use a gigE camera, power over ethernet so ur only running 1 cable out there. Irvision does a great job at all the popular barcode styles. With irvision, a simple vision application can pump out your barcode data to a register that you can use in your job selection program, no need to mess with an ethernet slave or port/io setups.
