Brand specific OLP's vs Universal OLP's

  • Are there some home made OLP's than are really shining?
Is a must to go universal even if you deal with one brand of robot and that you want vision?

Because what I see in the posts are people that advertise their products but I would like an unbiased opinion

  • IMHO, there is no must for a universal robot programming software. The OLP of the robot producer is often more accurate when it comes to micro-meters and micro-seconds since it is simplified a robot controller with a GUI and can even be cheaper (some, not all, and maybe not on the long run if it is rented).
However, INHO, the universal robot programming software can have big advantages
-it is often significantly easier to use and needs less training and experience
    - it may support your processes much better, since the OLP of the robot producer must basically support all the robot can do, saving you a lot of tests and time
    - allow for faster programming

I just added a (incomplete) list of some (shiny) universal robot programming tools.

    Visual Components https://www.visualcomponents.com/

I think I do know 10 more, but it will not help to list more. No SW is best for all needs! The question you have to answer yourself before:

    - What are the processes I want to automate? Some are good for handling others for welding others for painting, grinding …
    - How small is the lotsize, how many different variants or parts need to be programmed?
    - How much expertise in robotics do I have?
    - How complex is it (multi-robot? Line tracking? Narrow cells?)
    - How much automate shall the programming be?
    - What robot producer (and how complex is its SW)?
    - What is my budget?

I hope I was of some help. For more help, more information would be needed.

  • You are very right it all depends on several factors.
Just to let you know, we finally decided to go with the Fanuc OLP, RoboGuide / WeldPro and so far, so good.
    Thanks for your in-depth response
