Groups aren't per axis of the robot. Group 1 would be your robot is group 1 an external axis would be group 2, 3, 4 & 5.
Hope that helps -
In Fanuc understanding, group is a group if axis combined into a 1 motion group. Each group can include up to 9 axis. If we a re talking about 6 axis robot, then group 1 include 6 axis of robot and optional 3 additional axis. All positioners(1,2 axis) that Fanuc offers going to separate group. You also can put your external axis to separate group but it required additional robot option.

The group masks available depend on the controller and software version installed...
The max available for RJ, RJ2, RJ3, RJ3iB are 6.
For R30iA, R30iB and R30iB+ are 8. -

I'm disagree, here is what Fanuc telling on their web-site, manuals have same information, my experience with 6axis + 3 extended per group is same:
Extended Axis Control
The Extended Axis Control option allows you to set up a FANUC servo motor to the robot motion group. Total (including robot axes) of up to 9 axes can be set up in the robot motion group. These FANUC motors are typically used to drive a Robot on a Robot Transfer Unit (RTU), operating a Servo Gripper at the robot wrist or operating other positioning/rotating devices. -

But what I think Nagaraj refers is what the max number of motion groups or ("group mask" in program details that basically is the same) are available, not the number of axis per group.
And when I say it depends of the software version is because in V7.20 the max number of motion groups are 5, but it V7.70 are 8. -
Thank u DanN, scotty, rafahil. Finally i got to know that a group can consist of maximum 9 axes. G1 includes 6 axes of robot and remains with 3 other and the number of groups are dependent on controller model and the installed software. This is what i got to know. Hope its correct. Thank u fro ur replies.
