I'm trying to figure out how to robotized a manufacturing process. In order to be highly flexible, I thought about a robotic system that has two smalls robotics arms mounted on a bigger one. The principal tooling (laser welder) is also on the main robotic arm. The two smalls arms are used to place the parts correctly relative to one another. The forces needed by the two small robots are small. The robot Dextre on the ISS share the same principle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dextre). I have seen a similar setup in this video:

So my question is, can it be easily done ? Is it officially supported by any robot manufacturer ? Is there a technical name for such configuration ?
