When is defined the standard of controller, you can choose the control PC interfaces.
You have two options, D2608-K or D3076-K.
The second option have a DVI-I conector, then that way is possible to have an external image.
I didn't try to use a external vga board(computer board), the manual Kuka has a warning, " No liability will be accepted for modifications to the configuration that have not been carried out by KUKA Roboter GmbH"
But I think this can be possible.
The SmartPad uses an RDP connection to display the HMI. This locks out the DVI port.
One of the things on my to-do list is installing VNC onto a KRC4 and getting parallel displays working. It used to work on the KRC2s, and I would think it should on the KRC4.

I've got RDC to work to remotely view the KRC, but as Kuka seem to be big on SPOC these days it disables the SmartPad 
Well, that's inherent to RDP. It does the same thing even on normal Windows computers. Which is one of the reasons I prefer VNC.
Our customers use the external display, mouse and keyboard extensively and the VNC solution (which works well on krc2) is slow.
I've not tried it in the krc4, I'll do it and let's see what happens.

It does work... VNC on KRC4 that is.
It's a little more of a pain than it was on KRC2, but it can be done. After installing VNC server on the robot controller (I used UltraVNC) you have to add a new NAT entry to forward incoming connections to the correct port. Finally, there was a problem with my VNC server in that it would not show the pop-up windows from the HMI program - the ones that appear around the edges of the screen for speed and frame settings etc. This was solved by enabling "Capture alpha blending" at the server end.

Kuka Virtual Remote Pendant should work too. it is used in Kuka trainings
Here's how I went about installing UltraVNC server on my KRC4...
Get hold of a copy of UltraVNC from http://www.uvnc.com/downloads/ultravnc.html I'm using version 1.1.8, but I see that there are newer versions available since I did my installation.
On your everyday PC, install the VNC viewer using the downloaded installer. You only need to install the viewer component on your PC.
Copy the installer onto your robot controller and run the installer. You only need to install the server component on the robot controller. You can choose whether to install the server as a service or a regular program. I chose not to install a service and then added the server to the startup folder in windows so that it always starts when the controller is rebooted.
I can't remember all of the detailed installation steps, but I remember that it's a pretty straight forward installation.
When it is installed and running, you will have a VNC icon in the system tray. You now need to open Admin Properties from the context menu of this icon. This will open a dialog box with lots of settings. In the Misc. groupbox on the right hand side there is a setting "Capture Alpha-Blending". This needs to be enabled.
Also to get things working, you then have to set up a NAT table entry so that it can talk to the outside world. In SmartHMI, navigate the menus to Start-up->Network configuration. From the Network configuration window, click "Activate" to activate advanced network configuration. Then select the NAT tab from the row of tabs at the bottom of the screen. You then need to click "Add port". Change the Port number to 5900 and click "Save"
To connect to the robot, you need a network connection between your PC and the KLI port of the robot.
At this point you are ready to connect to the server from you VNC client. Run UltraVNC Viewer and type in the IP address of your robot. You will be prompted to enter the password that you set during installation of the server and then you should be in...
I can't guarantee that it will not give you problems if you choose to use this setup, but in my environment (Research, NOT production) it has proved to be extremely useful.
Hm... I did it, and it works, but a few oddities:
1: certain items that "pop up" on the SmartPad don't show on the VNC session. For example, on the VNC session, I could click on the Project or Clock icons, but the little pop-up windows only appeared on the SmartPad. Also, when I cut&pasted a module from the D: drive into /R1, the SmartPad showed a "This file already exists, Overwrite Y/N" dialogue box, but the box didn't show on the VNC session, even though that's where I was doing the cut&paste operation. It's almost as if the display has "layers," and the VNC server only captures one.
2: when I disconnected the SmartPad (I've got more robots than pendants at the moment -- oops), the VNC session went black. It didn't disconnect, it just turned into a black screen. Which strikes me as very odd, since I know that if I connect a DVI monitor to the robot, it works regardless of whether the pendant is attached. KUKA must be doing something odd with the display drivers.
Still, it mostly works, and I'm glad to have the option. Thanks for figuring that out, Bert! 
I think the ext dispaly problem is one of weakest links on the krc4 as if you get any prolems booting you have no dispaly AAARRRRGGGGGG 
And no idea what is going on unless you have a monitor to hand and possable a video card depending on the version of KRc4 you have bigger ARRRGGG lol
Did anyone get any futher with having dual displays working as i have a customer who wants it just so people can view the Program running.
Is VNC the only option or has anyone another option eg another video card maybe ?

Nope, I set the Alpha-Blending just as you described in your Nov 25th post. Without that, I didn't get anything at all. Didn't have much time to play with things, though.

How odd! I knew really that you would have read the post properly, but those were the exact same symptoms I saw before I enabled that setting.
Well, I'll try it both ways once I have access to a free KRC4 again.
I cannot get an RDP connection working, so I tried the VNC path. I can connect via VNC, but the only issue I am having is that is blanking out the teach pendant. When I login, it wants me to logon as a user. Any suggestions?
