3D Part picking

I want to pick parts from a bin to place on a conveyor using a camera.
I was wondering if anyone has had sucess doing this?

Hi guys

Narrow down your questions.
Bin picking has been in the industry for few years.There are many software companies working together with robot manufacturers doing this.
I just went to the Automate show in Chicago and there were 5 or six booths showing bi picking

Hi,
One of our customer want to do the bin picking.
The orientationof the components in the bin is random and seems very difficult to do without 3D vision.
They do not want to go to other robot other then Fanuc.
I checked with Cognex they refused to do that.
Even local Fanuc with their own Fanuc vision system is strugling to prove ot.

It depends a lot on the parts you're trying to pick.  Some parts are distinctive enough to make them easy to discern visually in a pile, and it might be possible to determine their complete orientation without resorting to 3D vision.  But parts that don't provide good features, or are dark and have poor contrast, or that can look the same from different angles, all these things raise the bar on the application. 

In any vision application, lighting is key.  You need to be able to control the lighting, illumination angles, and prevent variances in ambient light from causing differences in what the vision system sees.

For bin picking, you need to be able to do two things nearly perfectly:  identify a single part (hopefully on top of the pile) in all 6 degrees of freedom: XYZ, and rX, rY, rZ.  You also have to be able to determine if that part is clear to be picked up -- that is, if the end effector can mate up to the part properly without hitting any obstructions.  For example, another part lying partially atop the part you want to pick, or a part at such a tilt that the robot wrist would hit the edge of the bin while trying to match the part orientation.
