PUMA 76x

« on: May 18, 2010, 06:28:01 PM »

Hello everybody!

I got my 761 to boot into VAL. Is there a newer version of VAL for the 761 than the 761.2.0J???
I attached the two boot messages as jpgs.

If somebody knows somebody who might know something, I would be thrilled to get info.

Post here or send me a PM!

Thanks!

Unfortunately I believe what you have is a case of "ancient obsolete technology".
The folks who had intimate knowledge of the PUMA line are probably contemplating next week's shuffleboard competition.

Thank's! That helps... to get a laugh.

I know what I got since I worked with these 20 years ago.

Maybe there are still people out there willing to help.

Thanks anyways!

Why do you need to change to OS, The error messages you are seeing is an Hardware fault. The file name you are viewing is coming for the Boot chips on the A-B interface cards, so changing the OS will not help.

Thanks for the reply!

During the last few weeks I got the system to turn on arm power and I was able to make a potcal for Jt5 and Jt6. On the other axis I am still in the process of repairing the motors (new bearings, adjust brakes and clean brushes).

Puma560: in the first picture the boot message comes from the A-Interface, so far you are right. But in the second picture where you see the "VAL-II 761.2.0J P/N 935F28" message, this is the OS version loaded from floppy.

In the later 1990's we upgraded the systems in the company I worked for to "VAL-II 762.2.5A" because it has some improvements in different areas. But since that was for a 762 and i have a 761, it won't work.

Long story short: I am an "update-junkie" and want to bring my system to the latest / most modern (if you can say that for a 30 year old system) status.

Thanks to everybody who spend some time and effort to help me.

You can check with RP Automation, Inc. based in Bethel, CT. Ben took over the service and support of the PUMA line about 10 years ago.

762 2.5a is an upgrade due to some invalid gear ratios to jt2, I have found a disk labeled VAL-II 761 2.5A. I Will have to get my VAl-II emulator working, I written a Floppy DIsk Emulator which allows me to boot from a PC. I 'll make a copy of OS. Note: the file name of the OS as / and \ within the name, Windows does like them so i change them to + or - (my emulation does this for automaticlly both directions) but you need to be aware of this.

That's great news!!! Where do you have the info from? Thank you so much! Do you know by any chance if I have to change the software of the servo boards as well? I have 1.1.1 now.

Ex Unimation here in the UK from 1978-2000 so my loft is full of old 5-1/4 Diskettes, now solo a 1 man band working with Adept,Staubli and Kwasaki Robots, one of my customes as 4 VAL-2 RS185 Palletizing robots still in operation.
So i have some Hardware that i need to keep to one side. on the Eproms i don't belive that you will need to change them, but i will check some of my notes (if i can find them).

Again, thank you very much.

If you ever want to get rid of old PUMA stuff, let me know. I used to work with Unimation / Staubli and Adept in Germany from 1990 to 2001. Now I am living in Chicago since 2006 and was able to get a 761 in somewhat working condition. I want to put him (the robot) to work again in the near future and it is looking not too bad.

Not all of us are playing shuffle board yet. Did you fix the hardware problem? The connections on this robot were terrible. If you need parts let me know I have some junk still laying around.

Believe it or not, the robot is working just fine. It took about 4 month, some money, good advise and some patience.

I have a short video to prove that it is moving:

http://www.youtube.com/v/Cqvvmytmj7w&rel=0

Let me know what you have and want to get rid of (and price of course).

Thanks!

Just an update:

After I changed the boot eproms and the firmware on the servo boards, I tried to run the updated VAL-II 2.5A. Two problems occured: the arm started vibrating with all 6 motors, no movement though, and every now and then I got an "Fault detected by Encoder-Monitor". I still have 2 old (black) encoder, the others are the silver ones. Could this be a problem?
Is there someone out there who can help me with that? I know it is possible to make it work, I just don't remember what else has to be changed.

Thanks
