Trying to communicate with an omron vision system using serial

I need to write the command MEASURE<CR> to the Omron vision so that it will respond back with the measurement values. There is nowhere in the manuals to show how I can join the carriage return to the end of the string MEASURE.

I have tried cwrite(........."%-s\r",vis_cmd)        where DECL char vis_cmd[12]   
                                                                                     vis_cmd="MEASURE"

Does anyone know why this doesn't work.?  How do I join alphabetic characters with non-alphabetic (or  action)characters?  Many thanks
