Now my company desided to start Robotic laser cutting(trimming) cell to trim a sheetmetal parts (Automobile Body components) by using Laser .We planned to use FANUC  or MOTOMAN Robots for triming the large and medium components.Thickness of parts are (0.5 to 2.5 mm). I am not having enough knowledge in this field and  having no.of doubts.

                                                       1.Which Robot have to select?

2.Where and what type of Laser hesd to use?

3.How to transfer the path to robot?

4.How the laser gun was controlled?

5.Is it possible to use the same robot for other purpose?

6.Is any concern itself offering a complete Robotic laser trimming cell?

I was going to type out a long winded response, but these pages will probably answer a number of questions:

I have used lasers to do cutting for automotive for the last 8 years.

For the laser generation we use Rofin Sinar.  We have a DC015 which is a 1500kw laser and we have 2 DC03 lasers which are 300kw.  We use them to cut through PP plastic.

The machine integrator we used is Jenoptiks, a very good German company.  They have a US office in Detroit.

We used ABB 4400 robot to move the part.  The laser remains stationary.

The laser is controlled by a "working Sensor" located on the opposite side of the part from the laser.  Once the working sensor detects the laser energy it shuts the laser off.

In our operation it was not possible to use the robot for other purposes until we decommissioned the entire machine.

No concern having a robotic laser trimming cell, i have seen it done many times and offers a very clean cut.  The only concern would depend on what you are cutting.  There will be a gas out during cutting and could be toxic depending on what you are cutting.  We had to use a lime scrubber before exhausting through the roof.

Hope this helps.....

here's one:  http://www.kmtgroup.com/robotic/

but if you are being forced to use Motoman, then you should take advantage of their Applications Engineering Department.  Let them tell you what is the best robot for the task.  Someone at Motoman can also recommend several qualified systems integrators, I'm sure.

But it sounds to me like you guys have a lot of process engineering that you must do FIRST before you start getting into trouble with robots.
