I find a lot of people miss the mark when they're gearing a robot up for use (especially older ones of course), they look up the amount of memory available to them on the controller ... start using it, and realize they are constantly swapping files and running out of program memory
for milling/trimming it's a big deal -  other uses.. not so much.
on a lot of data sheets this memory limitation is not indicated

I'm going to try and get some numbers for program memory for the following

Fanuc  - RH,RJ,RJ2,RJ3, RJ3ib / RJ30iA
ABB - S4C / + , IRC5
Motoman - XRC, MRC, NX, DX
Kuka - KRC, KRC2

If anyone has anything to add already that would be swell.

I don't have any specific numbers on hand, but I do know that the RAM on the KUKA controllers is upgradeable.  I don't know if the KRC2 is limited to 3GB like Windows XP is, or if VxWorks and the KUKA-Cross driver can take advantage of additional RAM above that number.  The most RAM I can recall using myself on a KRC2 is 2GB.

Hmm thats a good point - the VxWorks would have to be able to run on a 64 bit platform to take advantage of more RAM as Windows 32 bit maxes at 3GB....Not sure if it has been tested on that platform?

Well, the KRC1/2 system gets a bit... odd.  And I don't know all the details.  But the memory-management program (Kross) that keeps the Windows and VxWorks systems from butting heads does so by dividing up the physical memory between the two.  I suppose that, in theory, it might be possible to let the two 32-bit OSs each have a full 3GB or RAM, but I doubt it's that simple.

I do know that, as you add active software to the KRC controllers (like the SoftPLC, or HMI programs), the minimum RAM requirements go up.
