The question is:"for which robot?"... that's because normally you should use a PC program to compile karel, and that program depends on the robot controller model and the OS version.

So, for that robot you need OLPCPro or Roboguide to compile karel.

The translator supplied with OLPC and its Windows variants are very version specific.  All R-J series can run KAREL programs.  But some controller software versions (specific applications) did not have an OLPC created for them, because the programs were not meant to be altered by the customer.  For R-J and R-J2, the DOS based OLPC product is needed for KAREL development.  For R-J3 and R-J3iA, WinOLPC is needed.   WinOLPC includes support for all controller software versions, so you don't need a version-specific product like OLPC.  For R-J3iC (now R30iA), you need OlpcPRO (OlpcPRO also supports R-J3iA V6.40 and V6.43, so there is a little overlap with WinOLPC).

FANUC Robotics still sells the old OLPC products.  They are DOS based and some of these old versions do not run under Windows XP and Vista CMD windows.  There are tricks to make them work if you do not have a DOS machine.
