Are R[] registers thread safe ? - I use a register in a BACKGROUND task AND main program both threads will R/W reg - could this cause an error (in windows you need semaphores to avoid multiple thread access to a variable)

You won't get an error from the controller. Whether or not changing a single register from two different programs at the same time causes a bug with your programming is a different story.
