Is it safe to use RI/RO as field IOs? Actually, we have a M20iA robot which came along with an option of using RI/RO. We planned to use RI/RO to actuate a solenoid. But Fanuc engineer says that we should avoid using RI/ROs because they directly go to 6 axis amplifier and if by mistake wires of RI/RO get shorted with any other wire that will cause fatal damage to the controller. Please let me know if anybody is using RI/ROs without problem.

Everything is simple... once you know how..!!

Well The very purpose of providing the RI/RO is to avoid the solenoid cables running all over the robot body. Moreover in anycase a mistake of wires shorting will have a damage even in your field equipment.

so Do not fear. Go ahead and connect the RI/RO for your application and take care not to short the wire. Even in case of a shorting the fuse will always take the beating. The damage cannot be fatal..

you have been advised incorrectly.

Yes. As somebody who has blown a couple fuses on the amp board, I can vouch for this statement.

The fuse you are going to blow if you do, it's a 3.2 Amp fuse, It's transparent and shaped as a tiny box.
On the R30ia controller, remove the big yellow cover and look around . You will find 3 of them. I believe its the same on a Rj3 controller.
You can find the fuse on the kit that comes with the robot or online, they cost like 2 dollar each

BTW, all this is info that I got. It's from a friend, because I NEVER blow fuses

Hello,

I've used RI and RO. But for solenoid connections I've always used relays. Next to the RI/RO connector may be another connector that should be god for connecting another 24V power supply for relays and solenoids, without any additional wires going along robot arm.
