Huh? My company has just purchased a reconditioned IRB 2400L to be used for arc welding, and I have been tasked with learning to to program the thing. Since I have no previous experience with robots I have about a million questions but just to start:

What texts, besides the ABB Manuals, would be recommended for a neophyte?

And what versions of RobotStudio / ArcWeld would be compatible with this machine? I've already gotten conflicting answers to this question so let me you exactly what we've got.

Type: IRB 2400 M98A
Control Cabinet Version: IRB 2400L
Then on start up the splash screen on the Teach Pendant displays:
Welcome to the S4 controller
ioc base-vr 001-040917-1339
System Pack 3.2 TP L
Program No: 3HAC2700-2/54
Copywrite 1993

I appreciate any help I can get here.

The model M98A and the software version 3.2 are key to these questions. All ABB docs have a model year on the maintenance manuals or Robotware 3.2 on the software manuals (lower front of the binder). This will get you to the correct documentation. It will be very important for you to get the key disk or key string because this is your software license, each ropot is delivered with a key disk, Key string doc, and a CD. The CD loads onto a PC and the key string or key disk are your software license for getting the re-boot software. For the CD you just need one that is version 3.2 or higher and all the software you need will be on it. You can use and cross over ether-net cable to connect and download the software but I like to make boot disks because finding a PC, getting the correct cable, and getting it to the robot will take more time then just pulling the batteries and loading the disks, don't forget to make good backups just for this case.
